A Festive Highball Cocktail

Friday, December 23, 2016

Merry almost Christmas! We've been busy this week picking up some last minute gifts as well as wrapping a ton too. So much to do still, but I am confident that we'll get everything done before the girls wake up Christmas morning!

With the holidays just a few days away and lots of merry making to be had, I wanted to share my newest favorite drink (sorry Champagne!). Plus, it only requires three ingredients. A major plus! A few weekends ago, we went to a holiday party and I had the most refreshing, festive cocktail I have ever had in my life. If you know me, that's probably not saying much because I am not the biggest drinker. But that's not to say that this is a drink you should dismiss so easily. It's got bourbon in it, which if I'm being honest, I have never liked but have always wanted to like because it seems like such a sophisticated drink, plus it smells so good. Well, now I can finally enjoy bourbon even if it's just a little bit and mixed with soda. It's all about baby steps, right?

I did get a chance to ask the hostess of the holiday party what she put in the drink and it's pretty much the same as this Chowhound recipe with the exception that she switched out the lemon peel for orange peel. So, I've never had it with the lemon peel, but I'm sure it tastes just as great and refreshing as it with the orange peel. We didn't have oranges or lemons when I wanted to make this for the first time, but then I remembered that we had frozen cherries (my late night snack when I'm trying to be good) and thought they would impart a more festive and sweet taste to the highball then their citrus friends.

Enjoy with family and friends! Let me know what you think!

Recipe from Chowhound.
Ingredients

  • 1 ounce whiskey
  • 5 ounces cold ginger ale
  • Twist of lemon peel (I used frozen cherries instead to make it more festive)

Pour the whiskey into a chilled highball glass over ice. Add ginger ale to fill; then garnish with lemon peel. Or in my case I added 3 frozen cherries to each drink. The cherries will keep your drink chilled and impart a pretty rosy hue to your highball.
